We have been in the garden a lot recently working on our veggie patch. The children come and help with the work for a while before running off to play. As I was planting out peas I could hear giggling coming from their tent. I went to see what they were up to. I was surprised to see that they were doing something really wholesome and thoroughly loving it. They had gone around the garden with little bowls gathering things they knew were safe to eat. Some of the things grow wild in our garden and some were in the veggie patch and had been growing over winter and early spring. The children had filled up their bowls with rocket, dandelion leaves and flowers, parsley, spinach, lemon balm and fennel with a colourful sprinkling of calendula petals.
The children told me the dish was called green yum yums. They were sitting their tent munching it with real pleasure. I like their style but dandelion leaves don't appeal to me and I would prefer a dressing too. The eldest then told me that that these things were going to give him super health because they grow really well in our garden and some of ingredients just grow naturally and are probably meant to grow here and be munched by us. Wow. There was I thinking I was teaching him about the world! The picture is of the salad they made me, I ate some of it raw then took out the dandelion flowers and leaves and added it to the big salad we had with our lunch. I will work on acquiring a taste for dandelion, every part of the plant is so nourishing.
