I have been working hard on many projects. I started this year with a grand plan and went full throttle until about mid-April and then I burnt out and had to recharge my batteries. By early May I was feeling fantastic again and it was because I went back to the basics of self care. As mothers we are often so busy taking care of other people and other stuff, we neglect our own needs, well I do anyhow.
So, in no particular order here is my top ten essential self care list of what I need to do to feel healthy and happy, simple but oh so effective.
Plenty of rest - 8 hours of quality sleep each night. To catch up on sleep and replenish myself, sometimes I have to go to bed when my children do!
Fresh, nourishing, wholesome foods - simple, homemade meals using quality organic ingredients
Friends and family - spending time with people I care about and enjoy being with, is so nurturing for me
Hydrate with pure water - around 2L of spring water each day, more in summer, less in winter (herb teas count)
Fresh air - getting outside, even for a 5 minute walk really rejuvenates me and takes the crazies out of my children
Connecting with Nature/The Divine - my whole day is different when I make time to connect
Laughter and play - a good giggle and silly behaviour, with or without children, is so effective at restoring my well being
Nourishing the senses - This can be a candle lit bubbly bath, quality time alone in nature or treating myself to a new essential oil. Something simple and special, just for me.
Daily movement - I am not into serious exercise anymore but I like to move my body every day because it makes me feel so much better. My choice of exercise these days is walking with my children, bouncing on the trampoline, dancing, yoga and playing with my hula hoop.
Creativity - For me this means playing music (flute or guitar), singing, drawing, modeling, painting, handcrafts, writing. I always feel better when I make time to let those creative juices flow.
